Current Exhibition: "Groundswell"
a collective, community art project inspired by nature

March 5th - April 10th, 2010
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 4, 2010, 7-9pm

Elspeth Hart, Sarah Hill, and Mary Shaughnessy created paintings that are a reflection of what nature gives to our North Shore residents.

In the spring of 2009 journals were placed in local gathering spots on the North Shore as a collective community art project.  People were invited to share their experiences and inspiration of our beautiful natural surroundings. They contributed a drawing, a word, a favourite quote or poem. The artists then collected these journals and drew inspiration from them to create a body of work expressing these sentiments literally and abstractly. Visit these journals and the art work in this unique collective project at CityScape Community Art Space.

Join us for “Meet the Artists Reception” Thursday, March 4, from 7–9pm

Journals were located at Lion’s Bay Café, Bean Around the World @Parkgate, Whole Foods, The Bakehouse in Edgemont Village and Dunderave, Savary Island Pie Co, End of the Line Gerneral Store, Ecology Centre,  Cityscape Community Art Space, Lookout Café Horseshoe Bay.

Upcoming Exhibition: "The World Garden"

The Last Station - Wednesday March 24, 7pm
It's certainly not true that Count Leo Tolstoy was unrecognizable in his day - he was revered as Russia’s greatest writer - but one of the teriffic things about writer-director Michael Hoffman’s The Last Station is that, Christopher lummer plays him. The old master is, of all things, a recognizable human being. He's not an icon. At least not to himself and his adoring, long suffering wife, Sofya, played with ravenous theatricality by Helen Mirren. The film is about many things, including the rise of quasi-socialist communes devoted to passive resistance that sprang up around Tolstoy in his final days, but it's finally, and most succesfully, about the amorous battle between the count and countess.
Director: Michael Hoffman   Cast: James McAvoy, Christopher Plummer, Paul Giamatti, Helen Mirren
Year: 2009 | Country: Germany, Russia, UK | Language: English | 112 min | Drama | Rating: NR

Me and Orson Welles - Wednesday April 7, 7pm
Me and Orson Welles is set in the exciting world of the New York Theatre. Teenage student Richard Samuals (Zac Efron) lucks his way into a minor role in the legendary Mercury Theatre production of Julius Caesar, directed by a youthful Orson Welles (strikingly protrayed by newcomer Christian McKay.) Over the course of a magical week, Richard makes his Broadway debut, finds romance withan older woman and experiences the dark side of genius after daring to cross the imperious, brilliant Welles. Richard has to grow up FAST. Me and Orson Welles, which had its world premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival ®, marks another departure for maverick filmmaker Richard Linklater (Fast Food Nation, A Scanner Darkly).
Director: Richard Linklater   Cast: Ben Chaplin, Claire Danes, Zac Efron, Zoe Kazan, Christian McKay
Year: 2009 | Country: UK | Language: English | 107 min | Drama | Rating: NR

Last Train Home - Wednesday April 21, 7pm
Stunningly photographed and expertly constructed, Last Train Home features the work of a filmmaker who has immersed himself in the lives of his subjects - the Zhangs - to explore the story of their fractured family. Many moments in this intimate movie are incredibly striking and ultimatly so symbolic of a much broader situation. The drama of the Zhang’s personal story - their specific struggle to simply get back home for a few days in 2006 - is so poignant that at times the film feels like it must have been scripted for a group of incredibly talented unknown actors.
Director: Lixin Fan   Cast: Siqin Chen, Changhua Zhan, Qin Zhang
Year: 2009 | Country: Canada, China, UK | Language: Mandarin w English subtitles | 85 min | Documentary | Rating: NR

Cooking With Stella - Wed May 5, 7pm
Transplanting the upstairs-downstairs comedy, Dilip Mehta has crafted a delightful feature debut scripted in collaboration with his acclaimed sister, director Deepa Mehta. Featuring charming turns from Don McKellar and Lisa Ray and a standout performance by Seema Biswas. Stella Elizabeth Mattews has been a cook in the Canadian High Commision in New Delhi for 30 years. She is brilliant at creatively padding her salary - with a few pilfered items, some minor overcharging, and a special phone-order duty free business. Cooking With Stella is great fun to watch as it offers a glimpse of how Canadians live in India's capital.
Director: Dilip Mehta   Cast: Don McKellar, Lisa Ray, Seema Biswas, Shriya Saran
Year: 2009 | Country: Canada | Language: English, Hindi | 103 min | Drama | Rating: NR
